He is survived by his brother Michael Maione, his children Anthony (Patricia) Maione, Victoria (Dan) Elliott, David (Karen) Maione, Andrea (Jeff) Hutchings and Christina (Brian) Hallett; grandchildren Anthony (Katie), Nicholas, Vincent, David, Marisa (Jordan) Loretz, Matthew Maione, Cainan Hutchings and Evan Hallett; great grandchildren, Anthony, David, Clare, Genevieve, Hannah and Lucie Maione, Patrick Loretz and several nieces and nephews.
Tony’s story began in the Bronx in a tough neighborhood in the shadow of Yankee Stadium. It wasn’t until he turned seventeen that he, his mother and brother left NY (and the Yankees) behind and moved to find a better life in Endicott, where he would soon meet the love of his life – a Johnson City girl named Gloria. They would marry in 1958, and would begin their life together, raising five children in a wonderful small town, far from his early environment.
Tony learned early to appreciate every one of life’s small pleasures. His positive energy propelled him as a top salesman for Prudential Insurance for more than 35 years, where he won many awards and trips – quite an achievement given the amount of free time he always seemed to have for exercise, skiing, writing poems, and meatballs. For decades, he was a fixture at the Boys Club and later at the Court Jester, where he excelled as a top doubles’ racquetball player and joke teller. He was also a great golfer, despite his “flying elbow” swing, which prompted one pro to exclaim that it was a miracle that the ball ever got into the air. Aside from that, he had a great short game and was on the winning end of many golf bets. His golf roots would eventually lead to the inception of one of the area’s longest running golf tournaments – the Provolone Open. Now in its 48th year, the tournament continues to raise more than $15,000 annually for charities, including the Michael J. Fox Foundation.
Tony adored his family. Despite busy schedules, dinners were shared each evening around a loving and supportive table. Later, Tony’s love extended equally to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and his legacy will live on for generations. He will be especially remembered for his warm nature and his likability, which were good traits to have when someone was upset with you for being really-really late for everything.
Our family would like to thank wonderful care givers at Good Shepherd Village East for their support and comfort. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that Tony’s friends and family donate to their favorite charity or help someone in need.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Wednesday, October 7th, at 10:00 am at St. Anthony’s of Padua Church, 300 Odell Ave., Endicott. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Johnson City. The family will receive friends Tuesday, October 6th, from 4:00 to 6:00 pm at Allen Memorial Home, 511 Main St., Endicott, and before Mass at the church Wednesday from 9:00 am until Mass time at 10:00 am.
