Duane Kenneth Palmiter Sr. 83, of Owego went to be with his Lord and Savior on Thursday, November 7, 2018 after an extended illness at Ideal Living Center in Endicott, NY. He was predeceased by: Parents Kenneth and Reba Palmiter, son John Palmiter and his dog Jack. Duane was born May 27, 1935. He is survived by Virginia Palmiter; sons Duane Jr. (Lisa) and children AJ, Dylan, Jourden, Stephanie and Danielle; David (Deborah) Palmiter and children Matthew Andrew; Carol (Maui) Palmiter, Christian Palmiter; along with Helen Cole, nephews Russ and Chris Charlier and families as well as his dear friend Ildi Mitchell. Duane graduated from Vestal High School and was graduate of Rochester Institute of Technology. Duane was a Veteran of the U.S. Army. Duane’s affiliations include Whittemore Hill Methodist Church & Choir, Tioga Peace & Justice Planning Committee, Former member of Vestal Jaycees, Ahwaga Canoe & Kayak Club, New York Canoe Racing Assn., former coach of Owego Junior Football League, Boy Scouts of America (Eagle Scout) and Eagle Scout Board of Review, member of several community choruses, including Candor Community Chorus, B.C. Bops and the Vestal Community Choir. Duane was a Linwood City Councilman in Linwood, NJ. Duane for many years was a software engineer and software quality engineer with IBM and also worked as a sub-contractor. He taught computer programming courses at BOCES, taught the FAA how to use the nation’s first computerized air traffic control system, weekly writer for the Tioga County Courier and wrote his autobiography. Duane was a Native American Representative. Duane was a huge Washington Redskins fan. Duane was the first in his family to graduate college. His saddest day was the day he lost his son John. Duane had a generous and loving spirit and his enthusiasm was contagious. He could make friends instantly. He was a loving father, grandfather and friend. He will be missed dearly.
A Memorial service will be held Tuesday 7 pm from the Allen Memorial Home, 511-513 East Main Street, Endicott. The family will receive friends at the Allen Memorial Home Tuesday from 5 pm until service time at 7 pm. Burial will be at the convenience of the Family at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Whittemore Hill Methodist Church, 1349 Whittemore Hill Road, Owego, NY 13827.
