Endicott

Emory L. Mertz, 91, of Maine, NY passed away at Guthrie Lourdes Hospital on October 6, 2025, after a short illness. Born to Evelyn and Warren Mertz in Maxatawny, PA, he is survived by his loving wife Bonnie, sons David (Marjorie) and Gary, and grandsons David (Trina), Jonathan and Andrew.
Emory was raised in Kutztown and Maple Grove, PA and was a graduate of Kutztown High School and Penn State Lehigh Valley. Active in the Boy Scouts of America, he served as an Assistant Scout Master. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army during 1954-56, serving as a Communication Maintenance Specialist in the 826th Tank Battalion in Hammelburg, Germany. After graduation from Penn State, he moved to Endicott NY in 1959 to join IBM Corp. By continuing his education at night, he was able to assume more responsibility, retiring in 1991 as an Advisory Engineer in the Printer Development Group. Emory and Bonnie were married in 1960, and moved to Maine, NY in 1965.
Emory enjoyed many activities including woodworking, gardening, downhill skiing, studying family genealogy, and gathering occasionally with fellow IBM retirees. With a love of travel, he explored the U.S. and the United Kingdom on many memorable trips with family, including a cross-country driving trip to California and a month-long excursion in the U.K. traveling on a rail pass. He could repair or build almost anything, ranging from repairing televisions, to building an addition to their home at age 75. His greatest joy was spending time with his family to work on projects or catching up during a visit.
Private Funeral Services will be held at the convenience of the family.
In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in his memory may be made to the Maine Emergency Squad, 2658 State Route 26, Maine, NY 13802.
