Francis N. Giacovelli (Frank) 88, of Marathon NY, born January 18, 1938, passed away at Wilson Regional Medical Center on October 13, 2026, after a short illness. Frank is predeceased by his parents Mary & Neil Giacovelli, formerly of Endicott NY.
Frank is survived by his sons James N. (Bernadette) Giacovelli, Endicott NY, Retired US Army Colonel Mark F. (Carole) Giacovelli of Carthage, NC, grandson Tony (Samantha) Giacovelli, and great grandson Anthony Giacovelli all of Endicott, NY.
Frank was a veteran of the US Navy highlighted with his service on the USS Hailey. As a lifelong disabled veteran Frank strongly supported veteran advocate organizations like the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) amongst others.
Frank grew up in the post WWII years and fell in love with “souping” up engines and the drag racing culture of the 50’s and 60’s. Frank built many fast and formidable cars. Frank knew all the local racing legends and shared great stories. Frank loved the early years of NASCAR and got involved with some of the teams. He loved auto racing. Frank was also a lifelong dedicated horse racing handicapper. You could always get a good tip from Frank.
Later in life, Frank became devoted to supporting Union Endicott High School sports. Frank himself lettered in track & field at UE. Frank especially loved UE Football. He was proud that his son Mark was part of the 1979 State Championship UE Football team and then later became a defensive standout in college. Frank loved providing “intelligence” (films) of rival Section 3 high school teams to the UE coaches. On any given day, during any football season, Frank could be seen at Ty Cobb field talking to coaches or just seeing what was going on. Frank wanted to help the team any way he could. Frank remained dialed into UE football until the end. Frank also loved following his grandson Tony at his UE Golf matches. Frank never missed a golf match for Tony, home or away. Frank was so proud of his grandson and his accomplishments.
Finally, Frank loved driving his Corvette. It was cool to see someone his age still cruising around. You could always hear the rumble of him driving all over town. The roar and power of an engine made him happy.
Frank was just likeable. He led a colorful extremely private life, was easy going, and was a true gentleman. Frank’s two sons and their families were his shining light. James, Mark and their families will forever have a special place in their hearts for “Chief”. The Giacovelli family would like to thank the staff at the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit at the Wilson Regional Medical Center for their outstanding care. Frank will be missed by all whose lives he touched.
Rest in peace and may God bless you.
