Binghamton, NY — George J. Hays, 97, of Binghamton, NY, passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, October 10, 2026, surrounded by his family.

George was a devoted father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend whose life was marked by unwavering faith, a generous spirit, a remarkable sense of humor, and a deep commitment to his family and community. He leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, service, and countless cherished memories.

He is survived by his beloved family, including his daughter, Carolyn (Tom) Harding; his son-in-law, Joseph Bayer; his grandchildren, Patrick Bayer, Brandon Wheeler, Meganne (Steven) Luecke, Shannon (Benjamin) Ely, and Patrick (Carly); and his great-grandchildren, Kennedy and Kylie Ely and Evan Harding. He is also survived by his sister, Faith Angulas; his dear cousin, Rev. Charles P. Connor; and a large and loving extended family.

George was predeceased by his beloved wife of 65 years, Joan; his daughter, Mary Jo Bayer; and his mother, Mary, whom he lost at the age of 21. He was also predeceased by his brothers- and sisters-in-law, Dr. Jack Harding, Sylvia Harding, Marie Harding, Tom Harding, and June Harding; his nephew, Tommy Harding; and his brother-in-law, Peter Angulas.

A proud graduate of St. Patrick’s Academy in 1947, George went on to serve his country in the United States Air Force during the Korean War. From 1950 to 1954, he was stationed in the Pacific Theater with the First RSM (Radio Squadron Mobile), attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant. His military service reflected the dedication and sense of duty that would continue to guide him throughout his life.

Upon returning home, George embarked on a long and successful career as an insurance agent with Security Mutual and AFLAC, serving clients for more than 55 years. Known for his keen mind, quick wit, and wonderful sense of humor, he had a gift for storytelling and delighted in sharing his many stories with everyone around him. His laughter and humor were infectious, and he had a special way of making people feel welcome and at ease.

George’s Catholic faith was a constant source of strength, comfort, and guidance throughout his life. A lifelong member of Saints John and Andrew Church, he was deeply involved in parish life, serving actively in the Holy Name Society, the Knights of Columbus Fourth Degree, and the C.Y.O. He also contributed to church festivals and played an instrumental role in fundraising and advocating for the construction of the new gym at St. John’s School. His faith was not simply something he practiced, but something he lived through his generosity, compassion, and willingness to help others.

His commitment to serving others extended well beyond his parish. Over the years, George created Fantastic Journey and served on the boards of Catholic Charities, CYO, and United Health Services Hospitals. Whether supporting a charitable cause, helping a neighbor, or lending a hand to someone in need, George was always eager to give of himself to his family and community.

Above all else, George treasured his family. He especially loved spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, creating memories that will be cherished for generations to come. His greatest passion, apart from his family, was golf, along with his beloved Tuesday night poker games. He spoke fondly of his poker companions, whom he affectionately called “the greatest group of guys,” always adding that they “always keep me laughing.” These simple joys, shared with the people he loved, brought him immense happiness throughout his life.

George will be remembered for his steadfast faith, his generous heart, his sharp wit, his countless stories, and the love he so freely gave to those around him. Though he will be deeply missed, the lessons he taught, the laughter he shared, and the memories he leaves behind will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him. His life was a testament to the enduring power of faith, family, friendship, and service.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to Lourdes/Guthrie Hospice for the compassionate and exceptional care George received during his final weeks. Special thanks are extended to his nurse, Lauren, and his aide, Kim, for their kindness, dedication, and support during this time.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Patrick’s Church, 9 Leroy Street, Binghamton, NY, on Friday, November 6, 2026, at 11 am. Burial will immediately follow at Calvary Cemetery, where military honors will be rendered in recognition of George’s service to his country. The family will receive friends at Church from 10 am until Mass time at 11 am.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in George’s memory to CHOW, 3 Otseningo Street, Binghamton, NY 13903.
