Grace Martiny Hanley, 103, of Johnson City, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, May 8, 2013 at the James G. Johnston Nursing Center in the presence of her loving family. Her husband, Loftus L. Hanley in 1978, her son John Patrick and eight of her nine siblings predecease her. Born March 16, 1910 in Allegany, NY, Grace was raised on a dairy farm which she fervently believed to be the best education available. She graduated from Buffalo State Teachers College in 1929 (correct?) and joined her sister Mary in Endicott where they both taught school in the Union Endicott school system. Grace taught fourth grade for many years and retired in 1979. At her retirement dinner she received two suitcases that traveled with her to every cathedral and church on every continent except Antarctica for the next 25 years. Her last international trip she took at the age of 95 when she and her 97 year old sister Mary traveled to their ancestral village in Belgium. Grace was a tireless volunteer in the Endicott community devoting her time to many causes including the Ideal Senior Living Center, the Retired Teachers Association and St. Ambrose parish where she was a devoted parishioner for 84 years. Grace is survived by her sister Mary Martiny Spencer (105) who resides at Ideal Senior Living Center in Endicott and her six loving and grateful children and their families: Patricia and Fran Angeline (Endicott), Michael L. and Catherine Hanley (Milan, NY); Edward J. and Katherine Hanley (Reston, VA), George T. and Roseanne Hanley (E. Hanover, NJ), Mary F. Hanley (husband Eric Savader, deceased) and Jerome P. and Angela Bevilacqua Hanley (West Chester, PA). Fourteen wonderful grandchildren, their spouses and 16 great grandchildren also survive her. Funeral Services will be held Monday, 9:30 am from the Allen Memorial Home, 511-513 east Main Street, Endicott, followed by a Funeral Mass at St. Ambrose Church at 10 am. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Johnson City. The family will receive friends at the Allen Memorial Home, Sunday from 2-5 pm.
