John “Jack” Gorman

Gorman, John T. (Jack), Age 95Endicott: Entered into rest on February 23, 2015 after a brief illness. He was predeceased by his parents Louis and Roseanna (Lynch) Gorman, brothers Louis and Joseph and his wife Elizabeth (Bette) Gorman. Survived by his sons, L. Richard Gorman (Geraldine) and W. Bruce Gorman (Joseph Nardone); daughter, Margaret Mary Gorman-Gagliardi (David); grandchildren, Heather Anne Fish and John David Fish (Tracey); great grandchildren, Justin, Cameron, Cooper, Spencer and Melissa; beloved sisters in law, Margaret Moriarty, Ruth Gorman; many loving cousins, nieces and nephews. Born July 28, 1919 in Binghamton, NY, Jack was the youngest of three boys. He was a 1937 graduate of Binghamton Central High School and earned his BS from Clarkson University. Jack was a combat veteran of World War II with the 34th Infantry Division serving in the British Isles, North Africa and Italy. He earned the Combat Infantry Badge, Five Battle Stars and received a battle field promotion to Captain with the 133rd Regiment. One of the highlights of his service was the time he spent guiding the then General Dwight Eisenhower across the roads of Tunisia North Africa in 1943. Jack was a life member of the 34th Division Association, The Anzio Beachhead Veterans, The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2332 and the American Legion Post 1645 in Binghamton, NY. He was also a member of Combat Infantryman’s Association and Past Commander of the 27th Division Association with whom he served before World War II. Following the war and after earning his degree from Clarkson Jack was hired by IBM and began a 35 year career in Engineering Management. He left IBM in 1984 and enjoyed a rich and comfortable retirement life. Early on in his retirement, Jack penned a short story which documented his personal experience during World War II. This manuscript, entitled “Citizen Soldier”, which he had published and humbly shared with family and friends, is a part of the collections housed in the Dwight D Eisenhower Library and the US Army Military History Institute Carlisle Barracks. Jack was indeed a proud member of The Greatest Generation. Jack was a voracious reader, especially enjoying non-fiction and anything written about WWII. He loved the time he spent fishing, playing golf and watching any sporting event he could find on the television. Jack was a proud patriarch of the Gorman Clan and enjoyed decades of work on the Gorman/O’Gorman family genealogy study. For more than six decades Jack was a member of Our Lady of Good Counsel Church where he served on the Parish Council. After Vatican II he served as a lector and Eucharistic Minister. He was a charter member of the Nocturnal Adoration Society and an honorary life member of the Endicott Knights of Columbus and Fourth Degree Color Corps. The family expresses heartfelt thanks to the staff at Lourdes Hospital in Binghamton and at the Ideal Living Center in Endicott, NY for the care they provided to Jack.
Family and friends are invited to attend calling hours at the Allen Funeral Home, 511-513 East Main Street, Endicott, NY from 3-6 pm on Friday, February 27. A Mass of the Resurrection will be held at 10 am at our Lady of Good Counsel Church, 701 East Main Street, Endicott, NY on Saturday, February 28.
