Marceil Ann Hamill
August 1, 1935 – July 6, 2026
Marceil Ann Hamill passed away peacefully on July 6, 2026, at the UHS Ideal Senior Living Center in Endicott, New York.
To know Marceil was to know unconditional kindness, unwavering faith, and a home where everyone was welcomed as family. Whether you were a lifelong friend, a neighbor, a Scout, or a stranger in need, she had a remarkable gift for making people feel loved, valued, and that they belonged.
Born on August 1, 1935, to Lester and Marjorie Padbury, Marceil was raised in the Town of Maine, New York, alongside her brothers, Jean (Irene) Padbury and Gerald (Freddie) Padbury. She was a proud 1953 graduate of Union-Endicott High School.
After graduation, Marceil pursued nursing studies at Harpur College and the former Binghamton State Hospital, spending a year on campus before realizing that her true calling was motherhood. She became a devoted, hands-on mother who skillfully balanced the demands of raising a family with a long and dedicated professional career as her children grew. She and John Hamill were the proud parents of five children.
Marceil was predeceased by her son, John Hamill Jr.; her daughter, Lynn Hamill Hughes; and her son-in-law, Rev. Michael Hughes.
She is survived by her children, Don (Susan) Hamill of Scarborough, Maine; Jan (Ed) Townsend of Endicott, New York; and Diane Chianis of Binghamton, New York.
She will be deeply missed by her nine beloved grandchildren: Caitlin, Tom, Will, and Arthur Hamill; Bridget (Josh) Mooney; Alan (Kelly) Townsend; Diana (Toria) Townsend; Hope (Anthony) Vanderpool; and Madelyn Chianis. She also leaves behind three cherished great-grandchildren: Amelia Lynn Mooney, Annie Jan Townsend, and Skye Maren Vanderpool, along with many beloved cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Deeply committed to her community, Marceil was a faithful member of the Maine Federated Church, the Nanticoke Valley Historical Society, and the Order of the Eastern Star. She especially treasured her years as a Boy Scout and Girl Scout leader, welcoming generations of young people into her home at 19 Main Street in the heart of the Town of Maine. Countless adults still fondly remember the meetings, adventures, and encouragement they found there.
Marceil shared her love of the outdoors with her children and grandchildren, creating treasured memories around campfires, paddleboat rides at Greenwood Park, camping trips, and ghost stories inspired by local folklore. "Grammy Hamill" continued camping well into her 80s, proving that adventure has no age limit.
She had an extraordinary gift for making everyone feel like family. Friends quickly became "adopted cousins," neighbors became lifelong friends, and everyone who entered her home was welcomed with warmth, laughter, and acceptance. Her generosity extended to every stray animal that wandered onto Main Street, knowing her children would happily help care for each new addition.
Marceil enjoyed a distinguished career spanning more than 20 years at IBM in Owego. During her tenure, she worked in roles ranging from assembling circuit boards to expediting critical defense and space program projects. Her work during the Apollo era afforded her the unforgettable opportunity to meet astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin.
Following her retirement from IBM, Marceil once again demonstrated her unwavering devotion to family by helping raise her beloved granddaughter, Bridget Colleen Mooney, after the loss of her daughter, Lynn. In her later years, she continued serving others as a dedicated caregiver for the elderly and as a volunteer for numerous local organizations.
Marceil remained faithful, friendly, fierce, and funny until her final days. She lived a life defined by service, generosity, resilience, and love. Her unwavering faith, boundless compassion, and ability to make everyone feel like family are the legacy she leaves behind. She will be profoundly missed and forever remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
The family extends its heartfelt gratitude to the entire staff of the UHS Ideal Senior Living Center for the compassionate, dignified, and loving care they provided. Their kindness and attentiveness created a community that Marceil truly enjoyed and called home.
A memorial service will be held at a later date in the Town of Maine, New York.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that memorial donations be made to Meals on Wheels of Western Broome in Marceil's memory.
