Mary Helen (Occhino) D’Angelo, 93, of Johnson City, NY, passed away peacefully on January 20, 2026, under the care of Mercy House of the Southern Tier. She was surrounded by her loving family as she ascended to heaven.
Mary Helen was born on January 21, 1932 into a large Irish-Italian family, in Oswego, NY. After graduation from Fitzhugh Park High School, she began working as an administrative assistant for the Oswego Shade Cloth Company (Breneman’s). Her greatest joy, was her marriage of 66 years to her husband Tom, while raising their six children in their remodeled 1858 farmhouse in the town of Maine, NY.
After her children were grown, Mary became a member of the Daughters of Columbus and the BPOE Elks, both located in Endicott, NY. Some of her happiest times were those spent with her loved ones at their cottage on Cayuga Lake or traveling each winter to Florida with their 5th wheel, visiting friends and family in nearly every city along the way. She cherished her many friendships, especially those formed over coffee at McDonalds. Mary also loved listening to live music - particularly entertainer Rich Wilson - and dancing with her husband Tom until the last song was played. She was a faithful member of Most Holy Rosary Church in Maine, and later at Church of the Holy Family, Endwell, NY.
Mary was an example of a life well-lived, deeply rooted in love. She will be remembered for her compassion, devotion to her family and genuine enjoyment of life. First and foremost a wife and mother, she leaves behind a family shaped by her commitment, kindness, and warmth.
Mary is survived by five of her children: Thomas D’Angelo, Mary Elizabeth (Richard) Patelunas, Michael (JoAnn) D’Angelo, Shirley Ann (Paul) Kupst, and Michelle O’Brien (Cris) Casella, as well as 17 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother Murphy (Joey) Occhino of Oswego, NY; nieces and nephews, and dozens of beautiful cousins.
She is predeceased by her husband Thomas James D’Angelo, infant twin daughter Mary Catherine and infant son Vincent, eldest son Joseph D’Angelo; parents Murphy and Evelyn (O’Brien) Occhino; sister Shirley Guertin/Thomas.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated 10 am, Wednesday, January 28 at Church of the Holy Family, 3600 Phyllis Street, Endwell, (live stream, to be announced). Burial will be in Riverhurst Cemetery, Endicott. The family will receive friends at the Allen Memorial Home, 511-513 East Main Street, Endicott, Tuesday, January 27 from 3-6 pm.
Expressions of sympathy may be made in Mary’s memory to Mercy House of the Southern Tier, 212 North McKinley Avenue, Endicott NY 13760.
