Vestal

Mary Ellen Moriarty, 76, currently of Vestal, New York, passed away on December 15, 2025 at UHS Hospital in Johnson City, New York after a long courageous battle with kidney and heart disease. She was born in Medina, New York, on November 1, 1949, to the late James and Marguerite Moriarty. Mary graduated from Medina High School in 1967 and Buffalo State in 1971 with a Bachelor’s degree in Education. Mary was a dedicated math teacher at the Cuba-Rushford Central School for forty years before retiring in 2011. She moved to Olean, New York for a few years before moving to Vestal, New York in 2019.
Mary loved teaching and her students, but her true love was for her family and friends. She would often comment her favorite times were with her family at Christmas and other holidays in Medina. Mary also truly enjoyed going out to lunch, going to the movies and attending plays. Although not much of a traveler, Mary truly enjoyed her trip to Ireland where she took a tour and attended her niece’s wedding.
Mary will be remembered by all who knew her for her kindness and thoughtfulness. Mary never forgot a birthday or special occasion of a friend or family member.
In addition to her parents, Mary is predeceased by her beloved sister, Kathleen “Kathy” Anderson who also passed away in 2025. She is survived by her siblings Thomas (Patty) Moriarty, Timothy (Terri) Moriarty, Elizabeth (Ronald) Scordino, brother-in-law Richard Anderson, eleven nieces and nephews, thirteen great nieces and nephews, and special longtime friends, LuAnn Moriarty, Cindy LaFever and Carrie Bold.
We would like to thank the staff at UHS Hospital and Castle Gardens for their care and compassion.
A memorial mass and burial will take place in Medina, New York in the spring of 2026. In lieu of flowers, donation may be made to the National Kidney Foundation.
