Mary Sonia Frankovsky

June 9, 1938 — April 29, 2025

Endicott

Mary Sonia (Osier) Frankovsky, age 86, passed away at home on April 29, 2025.
Mary Sonia was born on June 9, 1938, in Gouverneur, New York, to Reginald and Miriam (LaRue) Osier. Throughout her life, she was brilliant, beautiful, and ambitious. Even as a young child of ten she strove for the best; she competed in the Malone Municipal Playgrounds Prettiest Baby Doll competition and was awarded first prize. She went on to attend St. Joseph’s Ursuline Academy in Malone, New York, and graduated in 1956.
Sonia earned her nursing degree from Champlain Valley Hospital in Plattsburgh, New York, then did advanced studies at the University of Miami at Coral Gables, Florida, and Cornell Medical Center in New York City. She was especially interested in educating others about the signs and symptoms of cancer, the importance of regular health check-ups, and assisting cancer patients through their illness.
In 1971, during the American Cancer Society New York State Convention in Buffalo, she competed in “The Hope for Cancer Cure” competition in an effort to draw attention to the importance of cancer diagnosis and treatment. In the competition, Mary Sonia earned the title of Miss Hope for Broome County. She went on to compete at the New York State level and was first runner-up. All the contestants were scored on personality, beauty, poise, and short talks relating to cancer.
For years, Sonia dedicated her nursing career to the health and well-being of her patients. She was the head nurse for the Intensive Care and Coronary Care Units at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Binghamton before assisting Dr. Anton Vreede in his private practice. Even after retiring, Sonia never stopped helping others. She spent many years caring for her mother, Miriam, until her mother’s death in 2001.
Mary Sonia’s Catholic faith was always a priority for her. She had a special devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary and, as a child, was delighted to be chosen to portray her in her elementary school’s Christmas program. In more recent years, Mary Sonia served in a variety of ministries at St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Endicott, New York, including singing in the choir and becoming an active member of the Legion of Mary. She never wavered in her faith.
On April 8, 1972, Mary Sonia became the bride of Frank Andrew Frankovsky, son of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Frankovsky of Jessop, Pennsylvania. The Nuptial Mass was celebrated at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Malone, New York. The couple was happily married for 53 years.
She was predeceased in death by her parents Reginald and Miriam Osier; sister, Dawn McDonagh; and brother Dale Osier.
She is survived by her husband, Frank; her twin sister, Mary Sandra DeVincenzo and her husband Salvatore, as well as many nieces and nephews.
