Thomas was also predeceased by his wife Carol Jean Roma Zayac, by his infant son, Thomas Stephen; his brother, Dr. Peter “Bunny” Zayac, his sister, Judy Anderson; his daughter-in-law Tracy Robinson Zayac, and his beloved dog Rosie. He is survived by a son Thomas Michael Zayac, two daughters and sons-in-law, Christine Sheehy (Danny) and Jennifer Polemeni (Michael); five grandchildren, Ryan, Matthew, Liam, Emma, and Thomas, and also special god-children, nieces, nephews, cousins, caretakers, and many close friends.
Tom graduated from Johnson City High School with the Class of 1956. He earned a degree in Business Science Education from Hartwick College in 1962 and went on to receive a Master of Science in Education from the University of Scranton in 1967. He was also a proud member of the Alpha Sigma Phi Fraternity. Tom devoted 30 years to Owego Free Academy, where he served as Director of Guidance and coached both golf and wrestling. Following his retirement, he embarked on a second career as a college recruiter for Albany College of Pharmacy and Utica College. He also enjoyed working as a realtor with Farrell Better Homes and Gardens. An active member of his community, Tom belonged to the Elks Club, the Sons of Italy, the Union-Endicott Athletic Booster Club, and was a devoted parishioner of St. Anthony of Padua Church.
Tom embraced life with enthusiasm and treasured many simple pleasures. He looked forward each year to the Saratoga racing season, enjoyed collecting classic cars—especially his beloved ’56 Chevy—and cherished spending Easter holidays in Myrtle Beach with family and friends. He loved both playing and coaching golf, sharing breakfast and stories with the boys at the Reveille Diner, dancing to a good polka, and cheering on Syracuse basketball and football.
Tom treasured every moment spent with his family and especially enjoyed hearing stories about his children, grandchildren, cousins, and friends. Known for his quick wit, thoughtful mentorship, and compassionate ear, Tom touched the lives of many. His warmth, humor, and love of life left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who knew and loved him. A special thank you to his caretakers from Home Instead, Willow Point Rehabilitation Center, and UHS Homecare.
