Virginia Mae Sandhusen

Virginia “Ginny” Sandhusen of New Providence NJ, beloved wife, mother, grandmother and
great-grandmother, died peacefully on September 25 at her daughter Nancy’s home in
Vestal NY. She was 98 years old.

Born in Summit NJ to Albert and Myrtle Steeber, Ginny graduated from Summit High School
in 1945 and Beaver College in 1949. She later moved to Chicago to work for AT&T where she
met her future husband, Richard, at a YMCA dance. After moving back to NJ to start a
family, Ginny completed her certification at Overlook Hospital’s School of Practical Nursing
in 1972. She then gave 15 years of dedicated service to the Summit Volunteer First Aid
Squad before retiring in 1987. Along with her volunteer work, Ginny was an avid bridge
player earning the elite achievement of Life Master in 1999, and she would remind casual
players that the secret to being a successful player was “to have a good partner!” For her,
this was Richard, her partner of 57 years, who passed away in 2012.

Ginny spent her last eight months at Brookdale Castle Gardens Assisted Living Facility,
where she enjoyed many musical and social events, and became a frequent winner at
Bingo! She was a friend to many and will be remembered by residents and staff alike for
her sunny disposition and consideration for others.

Ginny’s family would like to extend their deepest thanks to the staff at Castle Gardens,
Ideal Nursing Facility, and Guthrie Home Hospice, for their loving care in her last days.

Ginny is survived by four children – Lora, Eric, David and Nancy – along with eight
grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren, who will all miss her dearly. She was a lifelong
member of Christ Church in Summit, and practiced the Golden Rule every day. She was
always eager to help others in any way she could, and her example of the rewards gained
through simple kindness will be remembered fondly
