Ernesto Abetria Madrid, September 17, 1935 – January 14, 2019. Loving Father of 10 and grandfather of 21. Certified Public Accountant. Avid sports athlete and fan. Outstanding dancer. Ernie joined our Lord and Savior around 1:20 PM on January 14, 2019 after battling dementia for the past two years. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Valentina, and their children Andres (Marivic), Virgilio (Jill), Eduardo (Christine), Josephine (Michael Bowell), Margarita (Jon Kristian Lommerin), Ramon, Charles, and Wilfredo (Quianna Saunders). He was preceded in death by his sons, Ernesto Jr. and Eugene. His grandchildren are Michael, Gabriel; Liam; Kiana, Yamila, Gizela, Eduardo Jr (EJ); Joshua, Sean, Caitlyn, Isabel; Steven, Cassandra, Bonifacia, Miranda; Angelica, Luzviminda, Kobe; Tyffanie, Gabriella and Jasmine. He was great grandfather to Abigail. Ernie earned his Bachelor of Business Administration from The University of the East, Manila, Philippines in 1965, and later obtained his CPA license. He was a Bank Auditor for the Central Bank of the Philippines until 1974 when he migrated his family to the USA to gain access to greater opportunities for his children; first settling in Rochester, NY. After a stint at Birds Eye Division of General Foods Corporation in Avon, NY, he moved the family to Greene, NY in November 1982 where he was a Manager at Raymond Corporation. He finished his working career at Cornell University in Ithaca, NY retiring in 2000. Ernie was a devout Catholic, having adopted the Blessed Virgin Mary as his mother from childhood, and believed that Our Lord Jesus Christ is his Savior. Ernie was very proud of his children and their numerous accomplishments. Later in his years he really enjoyed being surrounded by his grandchildren.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Tuesday at 10 am at Church of the Holy Family, 3600 Phyllis Street, Endwell. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Johnson City. The family will receive friends at the Allen Memorial Home, 511-513 East Main Street, Endicott Monday from 3-6 pm.
