Helen Louise (Carpenter) Wendland, Vestal, passed away Friday, November 14, 2014 at the age of 87. She was predeceased by her parents, Stuart V. and Dorothy D. Carpenter; her devoted husband of 45 years, Robert W. Wendland; brother, Earl Carpenter; sisters, Val Kissock, Jean Edsall, Nonie Knapp and Mary Ellen Bond. She is survived by her adoring children and their spouses, Judi Wendland, Robert S. and Dawn Wendland, Dorothy (DeeDee) and Jason Camp; beloved grandchildren, Michael Partenza, Karissa and Carson Camp; her brother, Carl (Elizabeth) Carpenter; in-laws, William Wendland and Wendy Christiana; many doting nieces, nephews and cousins. Upon graduation from Ithaca High School, Helen began her career as the Secretary to the President of Ithaca Fire Insurance, which later became Security Mutual Fire Insurance Co. She was a full-time mom while her children were young. She then returned to her career, as a legislative aide in the 123rd NYS Assembly office, where she enjoyed working until her retirement. Helen enjoyed playing bridge with cherished friends of over four decades, bowling in many leagues at Midway, and her friendships made through AVON. She will be remembered as a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, daughter, aunt, friend and neighbor. Most importantly, she was a mother and grandmother who cherished and supported her children and grandchildren in every way possible. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Helen’s memory to the Broome County Office for Aging’s Meals on Wheels program so that others can live happily and independently in their homes as Helen did.
The family will receive friends at the Allen Memorial Home, 511-513 E. Main Street, Endicott Monday from 3-6 pm. A Memorial Service will be held Tuesday 11 am at Vestal United Methodist Church, 328 Main Street, Vestal.
