John Monico

John E. Monico – 1924-2021 – age 96. ‘To love and be loved is the greatest joy on earth’. Our beautiful father took his last breath on earth and joined the angels and saints on Monday, Jan. 18 due to complications from Covid.

John was predeceased by his parents, Elizabeth and Angelo Monico. He was also pre-deceased by the first love of his life, Mary Jo Monico, in 1985. He is survived by his children John Monico, Ed and Linda Monico, Bette Anne and Jerry Gaube, Mary Therese and Larry Ostanek, and Tom and Mary Monico. John is also survived by the second love of his life, Marcella Monico and was blessed with numerous, loving grandchildren and great-grandchildren who loved him very much.

John is also predeceased by stepsons, Ed and Jerry Paradysz; stepdaughter, Deborah Ingraham; step grandsons, Brett and Douglas Shepardson. He is survived by stepdaughters, Christine and John Varvaro and Shirley and Roger Holmes; Stepdaughter-in-law, Tina Paradysz.

John spent his early years on Liberty Street in Binghamton and graduated from St. Paul’s high school. He proudly joined the United States Coast Guard at age 18, serving during WWII transporting soldiers across the Pacific. Upon his discharge he met Mary Jo Armstrong and they married in 1949. John graduated from St. Bonaventure University and attended many reunions as a proud alum. John had a wonderful career at IBM in the Personal Department enabling him to hire half the triple cities during the 60’s and 70’ s helping so many get their career start. He enjoyed a 35-year career and retired in 1984.

In 1985 he lost our mother, Mary Jo, to cancer. Not wanting him to be alone, the angels sent Marcella to spend the next 33 years together. John and Marcey had many good times traveling, dancing with the Bill Flynn Polka club, and enjoying their huge family and extended family. Grandpa had great pride in his family and they all brought him joy.

It is said that a wealthy man is one who is loved and gives love. Our dad, grandpa, husband, cousin, friend was extremely blessed, content, and fulfilled. His kindness and example will live on in us.

A private family mass will be held at Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church. A private military burial at Calvary Cemetery will be done at the convenience of the family.

My condolences to the family. I worked with John for many years. It was always a pleasure to sit down in his office and just talk. It is easy to understand the feelings people have expressed about him.

I first knew John as a young manager @ IBM. He was my contact in Personnel and helped me through my early years in IBM management. Later, John & Marci were regular members at OLGC and I would greet them at Mass and we would converse at many church functions.

I worked with John for 30 plus years. A fine person, great family man, a pleasure to work with. Will miss him.

John, You left us all so much joy and many memories to help us through. You had such a big caring heart. You knew how to keep it light.

I was so sorry to read about John's passing. He and Marcy were a staple at Village West Apts. when I was there. A sweeter, nicer man/couple you couldn't find. He was known to clean off a car or two when it snowed : ) I have such fond memories of him. May he rest in peace.

The first time I met your dad was at 40 Tompkins street at Aunt Fannies house he just got thru playing tennis next door at the Corbiscellos and he was a a great family man and was respected by everyone that knew him I kno your whole family is going to miss him it was a pleasure to know him may he rest in peace

As you know, I've known John since I was little but my main dealings with John was when he hired me at IBM. He was amazing at guiding me in my career there. Thoughts and prayers for all of you at this time.🙏🏼 Every time we saw Uncle Johnny, he was always upbeat and positive..He made us feel Important, and was always interested in what we were up to and how are family was doing. When we think of him, we will have a smile on our face! He goes down as one of the all time greats!

Very sad news, and so sorry for the family's loss, but what a grand and wonderful life he lived. A Friend to everyone! Would always greet me enthusiastically every time we'd run into each other, even if it had been several years. Would shake my hand say how good it was to see me. Always left with a good feeling. A gracious host at Christmas Parties on Allen St., and would welcome us all whenever we'd stop by. A wonderful loving Father, Grandfather, Great Grandfather, he led a very blessed and happy life. Ed and family Your dad was a great man. He hired me in 66 and I will have many great memories of him over the years. Prayers are with you and your family in this time of need.
