According to her beau of 60 years, we have lost our shining star. Shirley Ann Ulmen, age 78, passed away March 4, 2013 at Lourdes Hospital. Born August 27, 1934 at Wilson Hospital in Johnson City, New York, she was a graduate of Binghamton Central High School where she was involved with various clubs, including band. In elementary school, she became lifelong friends with a group of girls that called themselves “The Secret Six.” Shirley retired from Union-Endicott School District, LW West Elementary School, in the health office as the nurse’s aide. Just a few of her responsibilities included, keeping records, pulling splinters, drying eyes, comforting scared children and smiling at the fakers. Shirley was a parishioner, for 54 years, at Our Lady of Good Counsel Church. Shirley was predeceased by her son Kevin and daughter Kathleen, parents Rose and Michael Barno and numerous extended family members. She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Patrick Ulmen Sr., her son Patrick and daughter-in-law Marie, her granddaughters Krista and Hannah who she enjoyed spoiling everyday and always referred to them as her “Darlings” and “Loves of Her Life,” her brother Michael and sister-in-law Patti Barno, nephews Mickey and Jeff Barno, numerous Barno-Hutta extended family members and a multitude of Ulmens all over the United States. Although she lived in the area her entire life, she and Pat traveled extensively and had friends all over the country. She loved their many adventures together. Then again, she found joy in even the smallest of pleasures like a pleasant afternoon at the family cottage which would always include a good meal. Shirley was the wife, mom, sister, sister-in-law, aunt, grandma and best friend everyone wishes for. She was kind till the end and waited for her beloved family to have the chance to say good-bye to her. She will be greatly missed by us all.Funeral Services will be held Friday 9:30 am from the Allen Memorial Home, 511-513 East Main Street, Endicott, followed by a Funeral Mass at Our Lady of Good Counsel Church at 10 am. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Johnson City. The family will receive friends at the Allen Memorial Home, Thursday from 4-7 pm.
